Plans for irrigated estates, demonstration farms and seed multiplication.

What we do

Irrigated nucleus estates and demonstration farms that produce staples and export crops, multiply seed and show farmers what good practice delivers.

The planned irrigated estate would supply processing plants and host demonstration plots for cooperative farmers.

Why it matters

Only about 35% of Uganda's arable land is cultivated, and irrigation covers about 1.5% of the potential., Government aims to bring 1.5 million hectares under irrigation by 2040. Public schemes are growing but small: Phase II of the Solar Powered Irrigation Project is expected to reach 427 sites and 4,768 acres. Our proposed estate would test irrigation and crop practices before wider use with cooperatives.

What we offer

  • Crop productionStaples and export crops on irrigated land.
  • Seed multiplicationCertified seed of improved varieties, grown under licence for our cooperatives. See Seed and agronomy.
  • DemonstrationPlots where cooperative farmers see varieties, spacing, fertiliser and irrigation side by side.

Where we start

The Integrated Programme plans a 16,000-acre irrigated nucleus estate; this is a planning figure, subject to land and technical validation. Seed plots supply the Grain Hub's seed unit.
