Farming as a business.

How AVERON works with farmers and their cooperatives.

A buyer, inputs on credit and fast payment

Our farmer model combines inputs on credit, field support and a buyer for the harvest. Farmers join through their cooperatives.

Fertiliser use and crop yields in Uganda remain below their potential., Today 21,832 farmers in 39 Teso cooperatives work with DMI Ltd, 45% of them women. Across Uganda, the share of households in the subsistence economy fell from 69% in 2014 to 33% in 2024: more households now produce for the market.

How it works

  1. Register

Join through your cooperative. Your plot is mapped and your record is created.

  2. Receive inputs on credit

Certified seed and fertiliser are advanced through the cooperative, with tractor hire where needed.

  3. Learn and grow

Training in good and climate-smart practice, with visits from field staff.

  4. Deliver

Bring your harvest to the bulking centre. It is weighed, its moisture checked and its grade recorded.

  5. Get paid

Payment by mobile money, with the input credit deducted. You see every figure.

  6. Grow next season

The repayment record is used to assess credit for the following season.

Questions from farmers and cooperatives

How does a cooperative get involved?

Cooperatives in Teso can ask their leaders about DMI. A cooperative elsewhere can contact AVERON to discuss its location, membership and crops. Available services and participation terms need to be confirmed.

How would input credit be recovered?

The model advances inputs through cooperatives and recovers the credit when crops are delivered. The delivery and payment record would show the amount deducted. Terms must be agreed before inputs are issued.

What happens when a crop is delivered?

The planned intake process records weight, moisture and grade. Payment is by mobile money after agreed credit deductions. These records form part of the farmer account.

Will a farmer need a smartphone?

FarmGate is being developed around basic-phone services using USSD, SMS and voice, with cooperative clerks assisting farmers. It remains in development.

How to join

We work through cooperatives. If your cooperative is in Teso, ask its leaders about DMI. If you lead a cooperative elsewhere and would like to work with us, write to us.
