Impact and sustainability.
The farmer income, production and environmental measures we plan to track.
Why it matters
Close to one million Ugandans were acutely food insecure in 2024, and nearly 30% of children under five are stunted.8 In Karamoja, 473,000 people faced high levels of acute food insecurity between April and July 2026.27 Uganda's crop output grows about 2% a year, slower than its population.8
Our planned investments cover local oil and feed production, crop storage and sales through cooperatives. We will track farmer income, yields and post-harvest losses to assess their results.
What we measure
| Goal | How we contribute | Measured by |
|---|---|---|
| No poverty (SDG 1) | Commercial farming for smallholders | Household income of member farmers |
| Zero hunger (SDG 2) | Higher yields, lower losses, local oil and feed | Yield per acre; tonnes stored and processed |
| Gender equality (SDG 5) | 45% women members today; women and youth targeted | Members, credit and income by gender |
| Decent work (SDG 8) | Jobs in processing, logistics and services | Jobs created, by age and gender |
| Climate action (SDG 13) | Climate-smart practice, efficient irrigation, traceability | Farmers adopting practices; mapped plots |
| Partnerships (SDG 17) | Research, finance and offtake partners | Active partnerships |
Separate the starting position from targets
DMI’s cooperative register records 21,832 member farmers, including 45% women.65 The plan targets a network of more than 50,000 farmers; this is a growth target, not a reported result.76
The proposed estate and processing operations would create additional measures of production, employment and resource use. Results should be compared with an enrolment baseline and with the assumptions used in each project plan.
| Measure | Proposed evidence | What it would show |
|---|---|---|
| Farmer income | Enrolment baseline and follow-up income records | Change in participating households’ income |
| Crop production | Plot area, harvest and delivery records | Yield and crop volumes supplied |
| Access to services | Inputs and credit issued, recovered and used | Who receives support and how it is repaid |
| Participation and jobs | Membership, credit and employment records by age and gender | Participation of women and youth |
| Storage and processing | Tonnes stored and processed | Use of project facilities and local production |
Monitoring approach proposed in the business plan. This table describes intended evidence, not verified impact results.76
How we measure
The plan calls for a baseline when a farmer joins, with subsequent measurements connected to credit, delivery and payment records. Independent monitoring is proposed for reports to funders.76
